Host by Robin Cook

I have been a fan of Robin cook for a long time , almost 5-6 books span. Then i got hooked to different genre. Though i did read a few medical thrillers , none matched the writing and knowledge of Cook.

When I got a chance to read this book, i was happy and eager to embark on this adventure. This turned out to be better. The plot revolves around healthy patients ending up in a vegetative state and then being moved to a recently constructed fully automatic wing of the hospital with no one knowing the diagnosis or the cure of their various symptoms. When Lynn's boyfriend meets a siMilar fate , she starts noticing the abnormalities and the impossibility of the situation on its own. With help from her best friend , she starts digging into the patient histories and the test results and soon she finds the number of such cases are alarming for a single hospital.

What I have always enjoyed about Cook's books is the way the setup is created, to look like a day out of a diary. The characters do not just stay focussed on the investigation but the routine tells us a lot about them , the general outline of the place , the different departments and services. In a nutshell , the author transports you into the center of action with his simple yet engaging writing.

The climax is a little flat thouh I admit i will need a second look to grasp the reasoning provided in the end.

Overall , I enjoyed the book a lot.

My last love story by Falguni Kothari

I am not fond of love stories but I can survive a rare few , considering my own wedding is a love story sort. When I read the blurb for this book , I expected this to talk about the years of pain and sufferings a fatal illness causes the person and the partner. Also, as it mentioned a potential future lover , I was not sure how it would turn out. What I got was a very realistic , very sensitive and heart touching story of friendship and love. I could so much relate to the friendship of the characters and the blurring lines of love and longing when away from each other. Some friendships define us , shape us , break us and reclaim us with passing years. This is exactly what we find here for Zian , Simee and Nirvaan. With different ethnicity giving the characters their own baggage and quirks, mixed with the families , this story has everything to offer for a diverse and universal story of trauma , secrets , love and acceptance of lemons that life throws at you ! The conversations are not sappy but sprinkled with fun and humor. The fights are not too loud, but manage to bring out the hurt and the anger. The feelings of Niravaan who is going to die , his Wish list and the impacts on people around him are so beautifully expressed in this story never forgetting to include his wife and friend's thoughts and fears from past and future.  I enjoyed this  book, laughed and cried with the pages and even long after i closed it , i could not find flaws with this.

Hedon by Priyanka

This is one of those books I do not want to rate or recommend lightly. This is a book that is both abstract and yet it leaves a definite trail in your mind. Hedon is about a girl of seventeen and her life till she reaches twenty four. And in those years , between different cities and many adventures , Hedon took me through some of my own friendships and heartache.

Hedon follows Tara through her kolkatta schooling , her American college days and then her stay in Delhi. There are things that come to her easily because of her money and status but even then she is as messed up as any one with imagination and a kind heart can be. She is fun, she is free , she is scared and also amazed to be living. No matter what direction the story takes , Even through the pages where I felt a disconnect with the character , i could not stop admiring the writing. Such brilliant strokes of poetry and prose is served in this book. I have narrated and noted some random passages over the last week to friends and totally enjoyed the feeling of "being young" along this book. This is one of the book that I will re read for personal reasons.

I am so much going to look forward to next book by the author. This is quirky , lovely , sad , colorful and equally heart-warming even when it talks of heartache , pain and loss - of innocence , of love , of friends and sometimes even places we loved the most.
